Kat and Carmen greeted us immediately, and pointed us in the direction of the bar where our tasting was set up. Michael continued with the picture taking, as Kat showed him around the spotless winemaking facility, which was right there adjacent to the tasting room. You could actually see everything from the tasting room, via the large glass viewing windows; it was pretty cool!
I should mention that Kathleen Gaffney (AKA Kat) is their winemaker! She worked closely with Greg Brewer on the 2016 vintages, finishing the blending and bottling, and the 2017 will solely be hers. She had nothing but wonderful things to say about working with Greg, and how much she respected his work ethic.
Finally it was time to taste the wines!
Before going inside of the winery, we made sure that we took a ton of pictures; it’s really THAT picturesque. A couple was sitting outside next to the silo, enjoying a lunch they brought, and a bottle of wine they had purchased. Couldn’t say I wasn’t a little jealous! Mental note for next time.

crazy view. So far, so good!
We then proceeded in to the winery through a gigantic door, and into a room which was equally beautiful! Wood lined the walls and the high, beamed ceilings- oh my! Two enormous chandeliers hung from the high ceiling above, and there were large, windows that nearly reached the ceiling! There were also equally large, glass sliding doors leading to the outdoor patio, so you had a beautiful view from nearly every angle, including from their perfectly located sitting area, equipped with leather couches for lounging. An adorable little dog caught my eye, so it appears that they
TIME VISITED: 04/14/2018, 1:30:00 PM
We wrapped up our tasting, bought some wine (of course) and said our goodbyes to Kat and Carmen, promising we’ll be back for her 2017 vintage. We can’t wait!!
I had never had a Grüner before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was crisp, and bright, and a little acidic…. and really refreshing! A very easy drinking wine, and it was a perfect start to the tasting. Moving on through the flight, we got the background of Spear Vineyards. A rather newbie
tasting room, it opened in September 2017.
Driving in to the winery, we were pretty wowed by what we were seeing!
A beautiful, rustic barn structure sat on top of a hill, along with a large silo, and an outdoor patio seating area with a

It’s a beautiful Saturday day in the Santa Ynez Valley. You’re driving along and you see a winery that catches your attention, you KNOW you’ve heard about it somewhere, but where???....
