"Brix" is a measure of the sugar level in grapes, and that level is what eventually will determine how much alcohol a wine will have. Winemakers use various meters, both in the vineyard and at the winery, to measure the Brix, and they are able to get a pretty good idea what the alcohol percentage will be, before the wine is even made.
